With 13 years and seven albums, singing in a voice that “channels Johnny Cash's last days,” Mary Gauthier has established a reputation as one of America’s finest songwriters. Her album The Foundling resonated around the world and was named in many year-end top album lists in 2010. Album: The Foundling

The Foundling is Mary Gauthier’s story. She was born to an unwed mother in 1962 and was subsequently surrendered to and spent her first year in St. Vincent's Women and Infants Asylum on Magazine Street in New Orleans. She was adopted shortly thereafter but left her adopted family at age 15. She wandered for years looking for — but never quite finding — a place that felt like home. She searched for, found and was denied a meeting with her birth mother when she was 45 years old. She couldn't afford to reopen the wound she'd carried her whole life — the wound of surrendering a baby.
